Neville Longbottom || Gryffindor || Pureblood || Fifth Year || Open
Neville Longbottom was born to Alice and Frank Longbottom, two active and loyal members to the Order of the Phoenix during the First Wizarding War. Neville was the other boy the prophecy referred to, and while Voldemort targeted Harry Potter, a handful of his loyal followers attacked the Longbottoms. While the Death Eaters were sentenced to Azkaban, Neville’s parent’s were sent to St. Mungo’s, due to being driven insane from the torture thrust upon them. They would spend the rest of their lives there, not being able to recognize their own son, but he never stopped visiting them. Because his parents were incapable of raising him, he was sent to live with his grandmother, Augusta Longbottom, a stern, formidable woman who grew concerned when Neville didn’t show early signs of magic. His family, fearing he may be a squib, tried everything to get him to show signs of magic; he was thrown from a pier where he nearly drown. However, one day his uncle was holding him out of a window, when he dropped him, and miraculously, Neville bounced when he hit the ground. Relieved that Neville wasn’t a squib, his grandmother still believed that he would never measure up to his parents, and thus Neville obtained a very low sense of self confidence.
On the train to Hogwarts, Neville lost his toad, and that’s when he met Hermione Granger, who offered to help him recover the toad. As the first years completed their Sorting Ceremony, much to the disbelief of his family, he was sorted into Gryffindor, and immediately felt intimidated by Gryffindor’s reputation of bravery. Neville was a good student, but he wasn’t necessarily bright. He often bumped into things, dropped parcels, or forgot things completely. However, despite his disbelief in his own bravery, Neville constantly stood up for himself when it came to the taunts of Draco Malfoy, and often defended Harry, Hermione, and Ron Weasley throughout their first year. Though he constantly undermined himself, Neville was awarded ten points for bravery at the end of term, winning Gryffindor the House Cup.
The second year wasn’t much of an improvement for Neville, school wise. In Defense Against the Dark Arts, he was picked up by the ears by Cornish Pixies and hung from a chandelier. However, pixies were the least of his problems. After the Basilisk attack on Collin Creevey, Neville was certain he’s be next due to his poor magical skills, even though students reminded him he was a pureblood.
On the way to Hogwarts for their third year, Neville was surprised when the Hogwarts Express abruptly stopped. That was when the Dementor’s acceded on the train and affected him, Harry, Hermione, Ron, and Ginny, though all to different degrees. When they finally got to school, Neville’s luck only seemed to get worse. He managed to break a cup in Divination, ruin a potion, and he was the first student to be asked about boggarts. His just happened to be Professor Snape, and to counter the Boggart, Neville pictured him in his grandmothers clothes. This put Neville a little more at ease, and he managed to make it through his Defense Against the Dark Arts class without damaging anything.
At the start of their fourth year, as the DADA class was questioned about the unforgivable curses, Neville was able to supply information about them because they had been used on his parents. A few days later, Neville himself was put under the Imperius Curse to demonstrate what it felt like, and how it worked. As the TriWizard Tournament continued, Neville was able to help Harry with the second challenge. Neville had an aptitude for Herbology and was able to give Harry Gillyweed to help him breath underwater. With the TriWizard Tournament came the Yule Ball, and though he previously asked Hermione to accompany him, he later asked Ginny Weasley. The two went as friends, but enjoyed themselves a great deal, only managing to step on her toes once or twice. However, the joy was short lived when the death of Cedric Diggory was announced.
Neville was smart and knew this meant that the Dark Lord had returned, as he believed Harry. The idea of Voldemort’s return terrified Neville, because he knew first hand what Voldemort was capable of. However, Neville has proved his bravery time and time again and this year won’t be any different. Neville has known what side he’s stood for all along, and afraid or not, he’s going to prepare himself for whatever this year throws at him.
